3- Maqamat that are compatible with the Pentatonic Scale

This group is of an African origin and has five notes in its scales. Of it, are two   Maqamat: Rast Ubeidi and Rast Kinawi.

Rast Ubeidi

(Oud speakicon) The Third group of Arabic Music Maqamat is the one that have Maqamat with an African origin, and have five notes instead of seven, and known in the West as the Pentatonic scale.  One of the most prominent Maqam in this group is what is known in Tunisia as “Rast Ubeidi”, and in Morocco is known as “Rast Kanawi” as in the Nigerian city of Kin.  This Maqam is equivalent to the Western Major Scale  with a tonic on Sol, but with a deleted third and seventh notes (Ti and Fa) and contains five notes only (Sol, La, Do, Re, Mi) (Scale realicon). One can also stop at the fifth note Re (Sample realicon).  And here is an improvisation on the Oud as an example (Taqseem Oud speakicon).  The second example is a part of “Shangar Nawa” , by the Late Khumeis Ternaan, and its of the “Rast Ubeidi” (Song speakicon
